Danny Boy (1992): “To describe the sound of House Of Pain - it`s like drunken, street fighting rhymes, straight from Eriks dome...”
Everlast (1992): “If you speak to anybody who`s ever been in jail, that`s what they call the jail, the “house of pain”, and my personal view, what the House Of Pain is to me, it`s my head, that`s my house of pain, where everything goes on with me...”
House Of Pain consisted of three Members, Everlast (Erik Schrody), Danny Boy (Daniel “Danny” O` Connor) and DJ Lethal (Leor DiMant, born in Latvia). Everlast made his first steps towards his rap-career as a member of ICE-T`s Rhyme Syndicate (featured on the Iceberg-LP, “What Ya Wanna Do?”). The connection led to a contract with Warner Bros. and the solo-album “Forever Eberlasting”, which dropped out in 1990, unfortunately without gaining much recognition (meanwhile Everlast told in an interview, he is now quite hayyp, that the album flopped: “I could have been Vanilla Ice!”). At that time he had already hooked up with DJ Lethal, who was beatboxing for him on the ICE-T/Rhyme Syndicate tour (you can see Lethal on the back of the “Forever Everlasting”- album).
Together with Danny Boy (he and Everlast went to Taft Highschool, Los Angeles), House Of Pain was founded an burst out on the scene in 1992 with the self-titled hammer-debut album. Produced by Muggs (Cypress Hill), Lethal and Ralph M (Funkdoobiest) the album was and still is the ultimate shit!!! The track “Jump Around” was the party banger of the year (number three of the pop charts, sorry) and brought much recognition to the crew. The title “one-hit-wonder” may be right, but it can`t be ignored, that there was much more to it! In fact, most fans do not consider “Jump Around” being the best track of the album. Who needs a hit, when he`s down with the shit?
In 1993 the crew ran into trouble with promoters and the law; Everlast was arrested for possessing an unregistred, unloaded pistol at Kennedy Airport; therefore he was sentenced to community service. The plan to open a pizza and pub together with actor Mickey Rourke failed, because they all had criminal records and were unable to get a liquor license.
The follow-up album “Same As It Ever Was” came out in 1994 and went gold, it appeared to be more angy and raw than the debut, a real banger but without great commercial success; it failed to generate a hit single. Nevertheless it`s still my favourite album! This is what`s it all about!
The third album “Truth Crushed To Earth Shall Rise Again” was mainly produced by Lethal after differences appeared between the House and producer Muggs. The album missed some of the raw style of the first two albums and was slept on by press and public, although it has great moments on it.
Shortly after the release of “Rise Again”, Everlast left House Of Pain. In interviews he explained, that he left the band because it felt like work, it had become a job to him. About that time he converted to Islam and came up with a different music style, part-singing and playing guitar. He started working on a new solo album “Whitey Ford Sings The Blues”. On the last day of the recording he felt his chest tighten, struggling to catch a decent breath. His producer John Gamble finally called 911. Everlast suffered a heart attack and was brought to Cedars-Sinai Hospital, where an artificial valve was implanted. The attack was caused by a heart defect Erik was born with.
Everlast`s solo-careeer started off very successful with two albums, “Whitey Ford Sings The Blues” (1998), “Eat At Whiteys” (2000) and an EP “Today” (1999). His third longplayer “White Trash Beautiful” will be released in April 2004. Lethal is successful with Limp Bizkit and busy with his own record label “Lethal Dose Records”. Danny Boy completely disappeared from the scene; rumor had it that he founded a crew called A.T.F. (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms). At least it is known, that he joined forces with a guy called Erik Gregory (he reportedly did some programming on Linkin Park`s “Reanimation” album) to form a new band called “XSupermodels”. They made up a self-produced 4-track EP and started working on an album, but at the moment it seems not to be sure if it will ever be released. In the booklet of that “Best Of House Of Pain and Everlast”-CD it says that Danny reportedly left the recording industry and returned to the mainstream workforce. Probably bullshit - the latest news is that Danny Boy hooked up with a crew called “Shotblockers”. Check it out and stay tuned..
Everlast, Danny Boy and Lethal are reported to be still good friends hooking up whenever they cross paths. In an interview, Lethal said that he and Everlast discuss the possibility of a House Of Pain reunion. To quote Everlast: “At this point we talk about making a record for fun if we get the time to sit down together.”
Do so !!!
